Obituary: (name of newspaper unknown)

James Small of Jackson, died in the Albany hospital May 21, 1908, where he had gone a few days before for treatment. The Smalls were among the early settlers of the town of Jackson, and the greater part of Mr. Small’s life was spent on the farm where both his father and grandfather and many members of their families lived and died. He was one of eight children of Alexander and Elizabeth Maxwell Small, all but one of whom have proceeded him to the other shore. He was born Jan. 13, 1845, was married to Sarah Edie May 26, 1868. A few days more would have rounded out 40 years of Married life. Mrs. Small, a son and daughter survive. The funeral service was held May 23 at the home, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. T. Young, who took as the basis of his remarks the description given of Barnabas in Acts 11:24, “A good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith.” He spoke of the need of good men in the church and in the world, but no one is taken away until his work is done. Rev. D. C. Stewart, D. D., of Salem, also made some fitting remarks along the same line. The best eulogy that could be given, Mr. Small was a good man, Psa. 23 and John 14 being his favorite scriptures. For 31 years he was an elder in the East Greenwich congregation. He was supervisor of the town of Jackson for three years and held other town offices. A large company of cousins, neighbors and friends gathered to show their respects to this good man. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Salem.

James Small was born in the town of Jackson, Washington County, N.Y., January 13, 1845, and was a son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Maxwell) Small. He received his early education in the district schools and afterwards took a course in the Cambridge Academy. After leaving the Academy he began farming on his own account on the farm where he now resided and which has been in the Small family for one hundred years. Mr. Small has taken quite an active part in politics and represented the town of Jackson on the Board of Supervisors for five years. He was also Assessor for a period of twelve years. He is a Republican in politics and is associated with the Presbyterian Church, of which he is an elder.
On May 27, 1868, James Small married Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Henrietta Ann (Clapp) Edie. They have two children, Alfred M. and Hattie E.
