Digital scrapbooking, or digiscrapping, has grown emmensely in the past year.  It seems like each day more boutiques pop up.  With more people digiscrapping, it makes more variety of kits and resources available.

So, what is digiscrapping?  It's exactly as it sounds, using software on the computer to create scrapbook layouts.  A variety of software is used.  Some of the more popular programs are Paint Shop Pro, Photo Shop, Photo Shop Elements and Photo Impact.  There are also plug-ins for the software that can give extra effects.  An example is the Alien Skin plug-ins for Paint Shop Pro.

Digital kits can be purchased from the numerous boutiques or you can make the elements yourself.  A kit typically contains digital papers and elements that coordinate to the papers.  If you don't want to totally go digital, you can do a mix by personalizing and printing portions of your layouts using the computer and digital kits.

Here is a small list of benefits of digital scrapbooking:

  • Kits can be used over and over, unlike regular paper.
  • Layouts can be easily shared either as a digital file emailed or by printing multiple copies.
  • Layouts can be scaled to different sizes to print in different size albums.  For example, a 12X12 layout can easily be printed as an 8X8 layout.
  • No mess!!!  Reclaim your workspace.
  • No extensive setup.  Ever pull all your papers and scissors out and then not have much time left to scrap?  That doesn't happen with digital.
  • Undo your mistakes.  It's easy when digital scrapbooking.  You have much more flexibility to experiment and get your layout just right.
  • Enhance your photos.   Since you're already in your software working on your layout, you can conveniently try different effects on your photos.  You may want to change a photo black and white or maybe just touch it up.  You can try different things as you build your scrapbook layout.
  • Recolor elements in the kits to work best with your photos.  Most terms of use for digital kits allow recoloring items.  So, if you have the perfect kit, but you needed blue instead of green, you can still use the kit.
